Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde has spoken about his difficult childhood, his family's sacrifices and the racism he experienced growing up in Spain.
According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, 6 November 2026, the Spanish international reflected on his journey from a humble neighbourhood in Barcelona to becoming a first-team player for Barcelona and representing his country.
Balde joined Barcelona's famous La Masia academy at the age of seven, but admitted that making it to the senior team was never guaranteed.
"I arrived at Barça at the age of seven and there are none left of the team at the club. From the first day they tell you that football is very complicated, that maybe one or none stays," he said in an interview with SPORT.
The 22-year-old also highlighted the importance of hard work and dedication, explaining that natural ability alone cannot guarantee success in professional football.
He credited his parents for making significant sacrifices to support his development, recalling how his mother regularly travelled with him across Barcelona using public transport to attend training sessions and matches.
"My mother took me to the games by subway. We have toured Barcelona by public transport to go to so many fields," Balde said.
He added that his father's work commitments meant his mother often handled the responsibility of taking him to football activities.
Balde also spoke about the importance of sport in disadvantaged communities, revealing that his achievements could inspire children from similar backgrounds.
The Barcelona defender then addressed the racism he and his family have experienced, recalling incidents from his childhood when other children refused to play with him and his brother because of their skin colour.
"When I was little I remember wanting to play a game in a park and the children tell me and my brother that their families wouldn’t let them play with blacks."
He further revealed that his parents encountered difficulties securing employment because of their skin colour, while his brother was also subjected to racial profiling.
Balde's comments come amid uncertainty surrounding his Barcelona future. He has struggled for regular playing time under Hansi Flick, with reports suggesting the club could consider selling him in January.
Liverpool and Manchester United have reportedly shown interest in the defender, making the coming transfer window potentially important for his career.
