According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Barcelona beat Real Madrid to the signing of Rodri after a late twist in negotiations gave the Catalan giants an opportunity to secure the former Manchester City midfielder.
According to reports, Real Madrid had been close to reaching an agreement for the Spain international before a decision to renegotiate the financial terms allegedly complicated the deal.
Madrid’s director of international football, Juni Calafat, reportedly pushed to reduce the cost of the transfer, a move that frustrated Rodri’s representatives and opened the door for Barcelona to intervene.
Barcelona sporting director Deco quickly took advantage of the situation after learning that the midfielder could reconsider his options. Head coach Hansi Flick reportedly gave his approval, allowing the club to move decisively.
The report claims Barcelona matched the terms Real Madrid had previously agreed and presented Rodri with an ambitious sporting project focused on competing for major trophies, including the Champions League.
President Joan Laporta, Flick and Deco also reportedly held a video call with the midfielder, while Barcelona players Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal encouraged him to choose the club.
The move has been presented as a major achievement for Deco and Barcelona, who not only strengthened their midfield but potentially prevented their biggest rivals from acquiring an important player.
Rodri has reportedly made a positive start to life at Barcelona, although Flick recently left him on the bench for the team's 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. The German coach explained that the decision was related to managing the midfielder’s minutes ahead of El Clásico.
