Man Utd Eye Barcelona Swap to Solve Two Major Problems

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Monday, November 2, 2026, Manchester United and Barcelona could explore a January transfer arrangement involving Alejandro Balde and Lisandro Martínez, with the proposed deal potentially benefiting both clubs as they look to strengthen their respective squads.

Manchester United’s recent struggles have increased pressure on the team following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Chelsea. Michael Carrick’s side have collected just seven points and are currently positioned dangerously close to the Premier League relegation zone, remaining above the bottom three only because of goal difference.

The defeat also exposed weaknesses in United’s squad, particularly their lack of reliable options at left-back. Additionally, uncertainty surrounding Martínez’s future at Old Trafford has become another concern for the club.

United have reportedly identified Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde as a potential January signing. The Spanish international could provide the solution to their defensive problems, especially with Luke Shaw currently sidelined through injury. Diogo Dalot has been deployed on the left, although his preferred position is on the opposite flank.

Balde has reportedly struggled to secure consistent playing time at Barcelona, raising the possibility of an exit during the January transfer window. Manchester United previously showed interest in the defender during the summer, and fresh reports suggest they could renew their pursuit.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are believed to be considering Martínez as an option to strengthen their central defensive department. His performances and recent public criticism of Manchester United’s board have reportedly created uncertainty about his long-term future with the Premier League club.

A potential move to Barcelona could represent an attractive opportunity for Martínez, while Balde’s departure would provide the Spanish giants with additional financial flexibility to pursue other transfer targets.

Barcelona's financial situation remains an important factor in their recruitment plans. Under the club's financial regulations, selling players could increase their ability to register new arrivals and complete further business.

Although the proposed arrangement has been described as a swap deal, negotiations would likely involve two separate transfers rather than a direct exchange. This approach could allow both clubs to manage the transfer fees and payment structures more conveniently.

However, any agreement would require approval from Manchester United, Barcelona and the players involved. With United searching for a dependable left-back and Barcelona seeking additional defensive quality, the reported January arrangement could offer a practical solution to the needs of both European clubs.
