I played for both Arsenal and Chelsea - things were so different behind the scenes

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Former Arsenal and Chelsea academy defender Zech Medley has revealed the major difference between the two London clubs' youth development systems, highlighting Arsenal's greater emphasis on technical ability.

Medley, who spent time in both academies, explained how Arsenal's footballing philosophy suited his style of play after leaving Chelsea to join the Gunners in 2016.

"There are a number of similarities with the training," Medley said. "But the big difference is that there is a far greater emphasis on technique at Arsenal.

I'm comfortable on the ball and I like to play out from the back, so the way Arsenal play suits me perfectly."

Medley made the comments in 2017, offering an insight into the contrasting approaches adopted by the two clubs in developing young footballers.

Arsenal, particularly under former manager Arsene Wenger, became renowned for their possession-based football, intricate passing and emphasis on technical quality.

Chelsea, meanwhile, built a reputation for combining defensive organisation, physical strength and competitive intensity with an effective approach to winning matches.

Medley's assessment suggested Arsenal provided an environment better suited to defenders who were comfortable in possession and wanted to contribute to attacking moves from the back.

However, Chelsea enjoyed considerable success during the period when the clubs were associated with contrasting footballing identities.

Under former owner Roman Abramovich, the Stamford Bridge side won multiple Premier League titles and European trophies, establishing themselves among England's leading clubs.

Arsenal also enjoyed significant success under Wenger, with the 1998 double-winning team and the unbeaten 2003/04 Premier League champions among the manager's most celebrated sides.

Those teams combined technical ability with physical strength, featuring influential players such as Patrick Vieira, Sol Campbell and Emmanuel Petit.

In recent years, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has sought to build a team that combines technical quality with physical intensity and aggression, helping the club re-establish itself as a major contender.

Medley joined Chelsea as an eight-year-old in 2008 and spent eight years at the club before moving to Arsenal.

He subsequently captained Arsenal's Under-18 side and made eight senior appearances before leaving in 2021 for Belgian club KV Oostende.
