Wayne Rooney predicts how far Man Utd will progress in Champions League this season

According to a report by the Evening Standard on Friday, October 16, 2026, Rooney expressed confidence in his former club's ability to progress to the last eight, although he acknowledged that predicting their overall performance remains difficult.

Manchester United began their European campaign impressively, recording a convincing 4-0 victory over Sabah at Old Trafford. However, their momentum suffered a setback when they travelled to Spain and lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid.

The defeat exposed several weaknesses in United's performance, particularly their response to early pressure. Atletico scored within the opening minute, leaving the English side with an immediate challenge as they attempted to recover from the setback.

United's difficulties increased when defender Leny Yoro was shown a straight red card, further complicating their efforts to get back into the contest. Diego Simeone's team capitalised on the situation to secure an important victory, leaving Carrick with several issues to address before the next European fixture.

Before that defeat, Rooney had shared his expectations for Manchester United's Champions League campaign. While admitting that the club's progress was difficult to predict, the former captain believed reaching the quarter-finals would represent a satisfactory achievement.

“I'll say \[the\] round of quarter-finals. I hope for more, but I think getting back into the Champions League was what was needed this season,” Rooney said.

His assessment reflects the importance of United's return to Europe's top competition after a period away from the tournament. Reaching the quarter-finals would provide evidence of progress under Carrick, although Rooney has not ruled out the possibility of the team advancing even further.

Former Manchester United teammate Ashley Young reportedly shared the same prediction, while former England striker Alan Shearer also backed the Red Devils to reach the last eight.

However, achieving that objective will require greater consistency and improved performances, particularly in challenging away matches. The defeat to Atletico demonstrated how quickly United's plans can be disrupted when opponents apply intense pressure or take advantage of defensive mistakes.

Carrick and his players must now focus on their upcoming Champions League encounter against Como in Italy. The match offers Manchester United an opportunity to respond positively to their recent disappointment and improve their position in the competition.

A strong performance could restore confidence within the squad and strengthen belief in Rooney's prediction. Nevertheless, United will need to demonstrate greater resilience, discipline and attacking efficiency if they are to reach the quarter-finals as expected.
