According to a report by Daily Post on Friday October 16, 2026, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has criticized Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez after his explosive comments about the club hierarchy, insisting he has made the situation worse.
Lisandro was complaining about the club's recruitment strategy as he was frustrated they have not recruited more players to improve their squad during the summer transfer window. He made the comments after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap, Gerrard said Martinez had been trying to be honest and protect manager Michael Carrick but said he had made a bigger mess.
“I admire the way he has tried to be honest and open. He has tried to protect Michael Carrick but he has made a bigger mess,” Gerrard said.
The former England midfielder questioned why Martinez did not speak out in the same way after making a mistake involving Dominic Solanke against Tottenham.
“He never said this after Tottenham when he made the mistake with Solanke, did he? Just shut your mouth and defend,” Gerrard added.
Gerrard's comments have added another dimension to the debate about Manchester United transfer and the pressure the club is facing after their disappointing result against Atletico Madrid.
