According to a report by Football Transfers on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Chelsea's decision to sign Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace could have serious consequences for Palace manager Pierre Sage, whose position is reportedly under increasing pressure following a disappointing run of results.
The Blues signed the French defender for a reported €60.7 million (£51 million) during the summer transfer window as they looked to strengthen their defensive options with a player experienced in the Premier League.
Lacroix has made a positive impression since arriving at Stamford Bridge, helping Chelsea establish themselves among the Premier League's top four.
However, his departure has left Crystal Palace struggling to fill the void in their defence, with the situation becoming increasingly difficult for Sage after their humiliating 5-0 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
According to The Guardian, the Palace manager has been warned that he must improve the team's defensive performances if he is to avoid losing his job in the coming weeks.
The Daily Mail has also suggested that Sage faces an uphill battle because Crystal Palace failed to adequately replace key defenders who departed the club.
Lacroix was an important part of Palace's defensive setup before his move to Chelsea, and his absence has exposed weaknesses that the club have struggled to address.
The Eagles also lost Marc Guehi in January without bringing in a replacement, leaving them with another significant gap to fill at the back.
Despite receiving a reported £72 million from the sales of Guehi and Lacroix, Palace have struggled to recruit replacements of comparable quality.
The club brought in Honest Ahanor on loan and signed Axel Disasi, who has also been associated with Chelsea, but neither has managed to provide the defensive stability Palace need.
According to the Daily Mail's Bobby Manzi, the two arrivals came after the season had started, leaving Sage with limited time to integrate them into his tactical system.
Disasi previously helped improve West Ham United's defence during the second half of last season, but he has been forced to play in a central role at Palace despite the club's need for a natural option in that position.
Ahanor, meanwhile, is considered a promising young defender but remains a work in progress.
Palace's failure to secure their preferred defensive targets has further complicated the situation. Sage reportedly wanted the club to sign Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge, but negotiations failed to produce an agreement.
The Eagles also explored moves for Augsburg's Chrislain Matsima and Raphael Le Guen of Brest, but neither pursuit resulted in a deal.
These recruitment setbacks have left Sage attempting to resolve Palace's defensive problems with a squad that lacks the depth and quality required to consistently compete.
The Frenchman replaced Oliver Glasner as head coach in June, but Palace have reportedly won only four of their first 10 matches under his leadership this season.
The heavy defeat against Brighton has intensified scrutiny of his management, with the club now facing growing pressure to improve their performances.
