According to a report by London Evening Standard on Tuesday October 27, 2026, Chelsea will be without Joao Pedro when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash, with the Brazilian striker expected to spend several weeks recovering from a thigh injury.
The Blues were already without their attacking star during their weekend encounter against Tottenham, and his absence will continue to affect their upcoming fixtures as they seek positive results across competitions.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed the setback, explaining that Pedro would require several weeks to recover. The Spaniard admitted that the club could not yet determine precisely when the forward would return.
Alonso previously experimented with Morgan Rogers leading the attack against Tottenham, but the tactical adjustment failed to deliver the desired results. Rogers is now expected to return to his usual attacking midfield position.
Danny Welbeck and Estevao are both available for selection after Alonso confirmed their inclusion in the travelling squad. The pair could feature from the start as Chelsea attempt to secure an important victory against Liverpool.
Goalkeeper Mike Penders is expected to retain his position despite making a costly mistake against Tottenham. Alonso continues to support the young goalkeeper, while Emi Martinez remains unavailable because of injury.
Moises Caicedo should continue anchoring Chelsea’s midfield, with Romeo Lavia likely to replace Jordan Henderson. The experienced midfielder could receive a rest after completing 90 minutes in each of the club’s previous three matches.
Uncertainty surrounding Pep Chavarria’s fitness could see Malo Gusto and Marco Palestra occupy the wing-back positions. Wesley Fofana is also expected to return to the starting lineup as Alonso considers defensive changes.
Emmanuel Emegha has been included in the squad but is unlikely to start, meaning his wait for a Chelsea debut could continue. Reece James remains sidelined following knee surgery, while Jamie Gittens is approaching a return.
Chelsea must also manage their squad carefully ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United. However, Alonso is expected to select a competitive team as the Blues pursue progress in the Carabao Cup.
Chelsea predicted XI vs Liverpool (3-4-2-1): Penders; Acheampong, Colwill, Fofana; Gusto, Lavia, Caicedo, Palestra; Rogers, Estevao; Welbeck.
Doubtful: Pep Chavarria.
Injured: Joao Pedro, Reece James, Emi Martinez and Jamie Gittens.
Suspended: Cole Palmer.
