According to a report by London Evening Standard on Friday November 6, 2026, Chelsea have received an encouraging boost ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Sunderland, with Emi Martinez returning to first-team training following his recovery from a fractured jaw.
The Blues travel to the Stadium of Light hoping to secure another important victory after beating Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend, with goalkeeper Mike Penders keeping a clean sheet.
Martinez, who suffered his jaw injury during Chelsea's victory over Everton last month, has resumed training at Cobham while wearing protective facial equipment. His recovery has progressed ahead of schedule, giving Alonso the possibility of welcoming him back this weekend.
However, the Chelsea manager must decide whether to immediately restore the Argentine as his first-choice goalkeeper or continue with Penders, who has impressed during his absence.
Moises Caicedo's availability also remains uncertain after experiencing discomfort following the Manchester United encounter. The midfielder was not visible during the portion of Wednesday's training session open to journalists, with Saturday's final preparations expected to determine his fitness.
Aaron Anselmino, meanwhile, returned to training on Wednesday after previously struggling with an injury. The Argentine defender has also been selected for his country's upcoming international commitments.
Romeo Lavia could retain his midfield position after producing an impressive performance against Manchester United, where he replaced Jordan Henderson in the starting lineup.
Estevao is another player pushing to maintain his place after impressing during the victory over United, potentially making it difficult for Alonso to leave him out.
However, Chelsea will continue without Joao Pedro and Maxence Lacroix, while Jorrel Hato also remains sidelined. Captain Reece James is recovering from knee surgery and is unlikely to return before January.
Jamie Gittens is another absentee after suffering an ankle injury while representing England's Under-21 side last month. Alonso previously confirmed that the winger would remain unavailable for several weeks.
Predicted Chelsea starting XI (3-4-2-1): Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill; Neto, Caicedo, Lavia, Chavarria; Estevao, Palmer; Rogers.
Injured: Joao Pedro, Reece James, Maxence Lacroix, Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato.
Doubts: Moises Caicedo and Emi Martinez.
