Brad Friedel thinks Chelsea regret £25m sale, more clean sheets than Penders and Martinez

Chelsea may be left regretting their decision to sell Djordje Petrovic after the Serbian goalkeeper continued to deliver impressive performances for Bournemouth. Former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel has questioned the Blues' decision to allow him to leave Stamford Bridge.

According to a report by The Athletic on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Friedel believes Chelsea could have made a mistake by selling Petrovic to Bournemouth for approximately £25 million in 2025.

Petrovic joined Chelsea from New England Revolution in 2023 in a deal worth around £14 million. During his time at Stamford Bridge, the Serbian made 31 appearances, recording seven clean sheets and conceding 44 goals before completing his move to Bournemouth.

Since joining the Cherries, the 26-year-old has established himself as an important member of the team, making 51 appearances. His displays this season have further strengthened his reputation.

Speaking during an interview on talkSPORT with presenter Andy Jacobs, Friedel praised Petrovic's progress and suggested Chelsea might now be reconsidering their decision to sell him.

Friedel described Bournemouth as fortunate to have secured the goalkeeper, highlighting his quality and development since moving from Major League Soccer to European football. The former Liverpool, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Blackburn goalkeeper also expressed admiration for the Serbian's abilities.

Petrovic has featured 11 times across all competitions this season, conceding 14 goals and keeping four clean sheets.

Meanwhile, Chelsea's current goalkeepers have also shown promising performances under manager Xabi Alonso.

Emi Martinez has conceded 11 goals in six appearances and managed one clean sheet, while Mike Penders has allowed six goals in six matches, recording three clean sheets.

Penders currently has a 70 per cent save percentage, placing him ahead of Petrovic, who has 60 per cent, and Martinez, whose figure stands at 69.4 per cent.

However, Martinez leads the three goalkeepers in total saves with 25. The Argentine also has the best Premier League goals-prevented record, standing at +1.65.

Martinez is currently sidelined while recovering from a fractured jaw, creating an opportunity for Penders to establish himself as Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper.

Although Petrovic's impressive performances at Bournemouth have raised questions about Chelsea's decision to sell him, the Stamford Bridge club will be hoping Martinez and Penders can prove that their current goalkeeping options are capable of delivering consistent performances as the season continues.
