According to reports by The Athletic on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Manchester United's hierarchy has agreed to postpone making a final decision on Michael Carrick's future until the November international break following the team's 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The development comes after United suffered another disappointing defeat on Saturday, extending their winless streak to nine matches across all competitions and putting Carrick under increasing pressure.
According to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell, Manchester United officials have privately agreed to give the manager an opportunity to lead the team until the international break before deciding whether changes are necessary.
This arrangement means Carrick will have another chance to improve the team's performances in the remaining matches before the break. United are expected to face Roma in the Champions League before travelling to take on Aston Villa in the Premier League.
However, the decision to delay a final verdict does not guarantee that Carrick will keep his position beyond that period, as the club intends to evaluate his future based on the team's results.
The defeat against Chelsea has further complicated the former midfielder's situation. Manchester United entered the encounter hoping to secure a positive result but failed to make the most of their opportunities.
Morgan Rogers eventually put Chelsea ahead in the second half before Lisandro Martinez received a red card for a challenge on Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area. Cole Palmer subsequently converted the penalty to seal a 2-0 victory for the home side.
The disappointing result dropped Manchester United to 17th place in the Premier League standings, leaving them dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Despite the growing pressure surrounding his position, Carrick has maintained that his priority is preparing the squad for its next fixture. When questioned after the Chelsea defeat about whether he expected to remain in charge for the upcoming match, the manager answered positively.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have reportedly started considering alternative candidates in case the club eventually decides to dismiss Carrick.
Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and former Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann are among the potential replacements being discussed. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and experienced Italian coach Antonio Conte have also emerged as possible candidates for the position.
