According to a report by GOAL on Sunday November 1, 2026, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has criticised Lisandro Martinez following Manchester United's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, describing the Argentina international as a growing liability for the club.
United's miserable run continued at Stamford Bridge, where Morgan Rogers opened the scoring before Martinez was sent off in the 63rd minute after receiving a second yellow card.
Cole Palmer subsequently converted the resulting penalty to secure all three points for Xabi Alonso's side and extend United's winless run to nine matches across all competitions.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Murphy questioned Martinez's discipline and suggested the defender's recent behaviour could be affecting his performances.
"It's getting that way [becoming a liability]. A player of that experience and quality, he knows better," Murphy said.
The former midfielder also suggested that Martinez could be frustrated with the situation at Old Trafford and potentially considering his future at the club.
Despite Manchester United's continued struggles, Murphy insisted that Carrick should not take all the blame for the club's poor performances.
The pundit believes the problems extend beyond the manager, pointing to concerns about the players' physical condition and mentality.
"Look, it's not all Michael Carrick's fault. He'll have to take some responsibility," Murphy explained.
He added that United's players have looked physically inferior to the team that finished last season, questioning whether they had been properly prepared during pre-season or had mentally switched off from the manager's instructions.
Carrick now faces increasing pressure to turn things around, with Manchester United preparing for a crucial Champions League meeting with Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
The Red Devils will then welcome Aston Villa next Sunday as Carrick attempts to end their disappointing run and revive their campaign.
