According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday November 5, 2026, Robert Lewandowski believes Lamine Yamal’s biggest challenge will be maintaining his place among football’s elite for many years, despite the Barcelona youngster’s rise at an unusually early age.
The Polish striker has warned that reaching the top as a teenager can make it difficult to sustain the same standards as a player gets older.
Speaking during an interview with Big Cat, Lewandowski reflected on the significant age difference between himself and his Barcelona teammate. He revealed that he first met Yamal when the winger was just 15 years old.
Lewandowski joked that he is only two years younger than Yamal’s father, describing the experience of sharing a dressing room with someone young enough to be his son as unbelievable. However, he was quick to acknowledge the youngster’s exceptional ability.
The striker recalled recognising Yamal’s special qualities from their first meeting. He believes the teenager already possesses the talent to compete at the highest level, having become one of Barcelona’s most influential attacking players.
Despite his achievements, Lewandowski insists that Yamal’s real test will be remaining at the top over a prolonged period. He explained that players who reach elite status at a very young age can find it harder to maintain their standards when they approach their late twenties and early thirties.
The Barcelona forward also discussed how the financial side of football has changed. He noted that young talents now receive lucrative contracts and major opportunities much earlier than players did in previous generations. In his view, a few impressive performances can quickly lead to substantial financial rewards and transfer interest.
Lewandowski added that every player’s development depends on individual circumstances, as well as the support and decisions of their club. His comments underline the importance of patience and consistency as Yamal continues his promising career at Barcelona.
