According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday, November 2, 2026, AS Roma are considering a move for Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde ahead of the January transfer window, with the Serie A club reportedly interested in securing him on loan with a possible purchase option.
The 23-year-old left-back has found regular playing time difficult to come by under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick this season, raising fresh questions about his future at the Spanish club.
Balde has managed just over 100 minutes of action across four appearances this campaign, with increased competition for places limiting his opportunities in the starting lineup.
According to reports from Italy, as relayed by Esport3, Roma have identified the Barcelona academy graduate as a potential addition as they look to strengthen their defensive department.
The Italian side, currently managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, are reportedly exploring a loan agreement until the end of the season, with the possibility of making the move permanent afterwards.
However, negotiations could prove challenging because Barcelona are believed to have specific demands regarding the defender’s departure.
The Catalan giants would reportedly prefer to sell Balde permanently in January and are seeking a transfer fee of at least €40 million for the Spanish international.
Although Barcelona may consider allowing him to leave on loan, the club would insist that any purchase clause included in the agreement is compulsory rather than optional.
Such conditions could complicate Roma’s pursuit, especially with the Italian club also needing to consider the player’s salary.
Meanwhile, Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with Balde, potentially increasing competition for his signature if Barcelona decide to make him available.
Another option being considered is the possibility of including the left-back in a transfer arrangement for Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso.
For now, Balde remains focused on improving his situation at Barcelona and convincing Flick that he deserves more opportunities. His chances could also be influenced by the club’s current defensive injury problems.
Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League meeting with Aston Villa, Flick acknowledged that the defender’s lack of regular football had affected his confidence.
“What’s happening to him is normal; when you don’t play often, you lack confidence. I see him training well, but we have to decide what’s best for the team, and Joao Cancelo is in great form,” the German manager said.
Despite his limited involvement this season, Balde remains a highly-rated product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy. However, his current situation has created uncertainty about how long he will remain at Camp Nou.
His future could become clearer in January, depending on whether Roma are prepared to meet Barcelona’s financial demands and agree to the conditions required for a potential deal.
