According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League, with the hosts finishing the contest with nine players following the dismissals of Yehor Yarmolyuk and Vitaly Janelt.
The result ended Brentford’s unbeaten start to the league campaign and lifted Liverpool above their opponents in the standings after an entertaining encounter.
Both teams struggled to create clear-cut opportunities during the opening 20 minutes, but Brentford gradually increased their attacking threat. Michael Kayode nearly opened the scoring when his effort was deflected narrowly wide by Jeremy Jacquet.
Liverpool responded with a dangerous counterattack from the resulting corner, but Bradley Barcola failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity against Caoimhin Kelleher, dragging his effort wide. Igor Thiago also threatened for the hosts, only to be denied by another important intervention from Jacquet.
Brentford eventually made their pressure count in the 44th minute. Thiago delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, and Keane Lewis-Potter stretched to guide the ball beyond Alisson Becker to give the hosts a deserved lead.
However, Brentford’s advantage was overshadowed by a disciplinary incident in first-half stoppage time. Yarmolyuk received a straight red card after directing his head towards Jacquet during an altercation between the players.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Brentford maintained their defensive organisation after the restart and continued threatening Liverpool on the counterattack. Thiago was fortunate to escape with a yellow card early in the second half following an apparent elbow incident involving Jacquet.
Liverpool increased their attacking pressure as they searched for an equaliser. Alexis Mac Allister produced an impressive individual run past several challenges before forcing Kelleher into a save.
The visitors eventually found their breakthrough through Victor Munoz, who cut inside before calmly guiding the ball into the corner of the net to restore parity.
Liverpool continued pushing forward, and Alexander Isak completed the turnaround by controlling the ball under pressure before finishing confidently past Kelleher to make it 2-1.
Brentford attempted to respond, but Thiago missed a promising opportunity from close range. Barcola subsequently struck the crossbar as Liverpool searched for a third goal to put the contest beyond reach.
The hosts’ hopes of rescuing a point suffered another setback in stoppage time when Janelt received a second yellow card for stopping a promising Liverpool counterattack, leaving Brentford with nine players.
