Barcelona legend Samuel Eto’o opens up on Real Madrid experience as teenager

According to a report by Barca Universal published on Friday, October 30, 2026, former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has opened up about his challenging introduction to life in Spain as a teenager, recalling how Real Madrid failed to send anyone to welcome him when he arrived at the airport at the age of 16.

The former Cameroon international explained that he travelled to Spain expecting an official representative of the Spanish giants to receive him at Barajas Airport. However, upon arriving, he discovered that nobody from the club had been sent to pick him up, leaving him confused and frightened in an unfamiliar environment.

Recalling the incident, Eto’o explained how an African street cleaner working at the airport eventually came to his assistance when he did not know what to do.

“When I travelled to Spain at the age of 16, no Real Madrid official or representative came to meet me at Barajas Airport,” he said, as quoted by SPORT.

Eto’o's move to Spain came after Real Madrid scouts identified him as a promising young footballer with considerable potential. The club brought him into their system with the intention of developing him as part of their reserve team.

However, his early experience at the Santiago Bernabeu was far from straightforward. The young forward struggled to establish himself during his initial period at the club and was eventually sent out on loan to Leganes after completing his first season.

Despite the disappointing circumstances surrounding his arrival and early development, Eto’o made it clear that he does not hold any bitterness towards the Spanish club.

“I harbour no ill will towards Real Madrid,” he stated.

The former striker further explained that the difficult experience played an important role in shaping his character and professional development. According to him, dealing with the situation at such a young age taught him valuable lessons about independence, resilience and overcoming challenges.

“That experience helped me grow, both personally and as a footballer,” he concluded.

Eto’o eventually established himself as one of the most outstanding strikers of his generation, enjoying tremendous success during his professional career. His achievements included memorable spells at Barcelona and Inter Milan, where he won major trophies and earned recognition as one of football's most accomplished forwards.

His recollection offers an insight into the personal challenges he faced before achieving international success.
