According to a report by Madrid Universal on Saturday October 31, 2026, Former Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus has criticised Vinicius Junior, claiming the Brazilian is hurting Real Madrid and that the team performs better without him.
The German legend believes the forward’s attitude and public image are damaging the club, and has urged Madrid to consider disciplinary action.
Vinicius missed Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona through suspension. He is also set to sit out two more La Liga matches before returning. His absence has coincided with an improved run under Jose Mourinho, prompting Matthaus to question his importance to the side.
Speaking to BILD, the former Germany captain said he was interested to see what Madrid would decide about the Brazilian. He described Vinicius as difficult and argued that the team functions more effectively without him.
Matthaus also welcomed the forward’s 17th-place finish in the 2026 Ballon d’Or voting. He compared Vinicius unfavourably with winner Harry Kane, whom he praised for his conduct.
The German further claimed that Madrid look more disciplined and united when Vinicius is unavailable. He suggested the player’s ego and body language negatively affect the squad and the club’s image.
He called on club president Florentino Perez to intervene, either by reprimanding the forward or backing Mourinho if the coach decides to leave him on the bench.
However, Vinicius’ recent struggles should not erase his achievements. The Brazilian played a decisive role in Real Madrid’s last two Champions League triumphs, scoring the winning goal in both finals. His dribbling and match-changing ability remain valuable despite his current dip in form.
Although Madrid appear more balanced defensively without him, dropping Vinicius permanently is not necessarily the answer. Mourinho is focused on helping the forward rediscover his best form, and his response after completing the suspension will be closely watched.
