Real Madrid: Eder Militao expected to return to starting lineup soon

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Real Madrid are increasingly optimistic that Eder Militao will return to the starting lineup in the coming weeks after overcoming a lengthy injury layoff.

Journalist Jorge Picon reportedly revealed that confidence is growing within the club that the Brazilian centre-back will soon establish himself in Jose Mourinho’s plans following his recent return to action.

Militao made his comeback as a late substitute during Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Sevilla, bringing an end to 181 days on the sidelines. His extended absence was a significant setback for the defender, who also missed the World Cup while recovering from his injury.

Although he played only a brief part in the Sevilla match, his return represents an important boost for Madrid as they approach a demanding period in their campaign.

When fully fit, Militao is considered one of Real Madrid’s most reliable defensive options. His physical strength, recovery speed and experience in high-pressure matches make him a valuable presence at the back, particularly against opponents who consistently threaten the defensive line.

His return also increases competition for places in central defence, where Antonio Rudiger, Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen are among the options available to Mourinho. The Brazilian’s availability gives the manager greater flexibility when deciding on his preferred defensive partnership.

Militao’s comeback is particularly timely, with Real Madrid preparing for their highly anticipated El Clasico meeting with Barcelona on October 25. His return could provide Mourinho with an additional defensive option ahead of one of the club’s most important fixtures of the season.

However, Madrid are expected to handle his recovery cautiously after such a prolonged absence. The defender could be rested for the Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig as the coaching staff focus on rebuilding his match fitness and ensuring he returns to full sharpness without unnecessary risks.

Although it remains uncertain whether Militao will feature against Barcelona, the reported confidence within the club suggests that his return to the starting XI could be approaching. His performances in training and his ability to regain full fitness are likely to determine how quickly he reclaims a regular role in Mourinho’s defence.
