Michael Carrick reveals talks with Manchester United board amid uncertain future

According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Friday, October 23, 2026, Michael Carrick has confirmed that he has held discussions with Manchester United’s hierarchy as uncertainty continues to surround his position as manager.

Carrick is facing increasing scrutiny following a disappointing spell for the Red Devils, whose struggles continued with a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday. The result extended United’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions, intensifying concerns about the team’s performances.

Speaking about the situation, Carrick acknowledged that conversations were taking place behind the scenes as the club assessed its current difficulties.

“There are always conversations going on. It’s obvious how we’re all feeling,” he said, while accepting responsibility for the team’s results.

Despite the growing pressure, the United manager remains confident that he can reverse the team’s fortunes. Asked whether he believed he could turn things around, Carrick responded that he was 100 per cent confident in his ability to improve the situation.

The former midfielder also admitted that the team’s struggles were painful but insisted that the disappointment would encourage him to work harder and find solutions.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are reportedly exploring alternative managerial options as concerns grow over their recent performances. Former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe, Unai Emery, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann have all been linked with the position.

Howe has reportedly emerged as a preferred candidate for sporting director Jason Wilcox, although no official decision regarding Carrick’s future has been announced.

Carrick’s immediate focus will be Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, a fixture that could prove significant as he attempts to steady the team and ease the pressure surrounding his position.

With uncertainty continuing to grow at Old Trafford, Manchester United will be eager to secure a positive result against Bournemouth and restore confidence among their supporters.

For Carrick, the challenge is to translate his confidence into improved performances and results, with the coming matches potentially playing an important role in determining the next stage of his tenure.
