According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 16, 2026, Calafiori’s comments highlight the strong competitive mentality within the Arsenal dressing room, which has played an important role in the club’s success. The Gunners won the Premier League title during the 2025/26 season, with players such as Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhaes and Bukayo Saka demonstrating their determination throughout the campaign.
When asked which teammate finds losing the hardest to accept, Calafiori identified Gyokeres as a player whose competitive nature stands out. Although the Italian defender acknowledged his own determination to win, he suggested that the Swedish forward reacts particularly strongly to disappointing results.
Arsenal signed Gyokeres from Sporting CP in 2025 for £55 million, with additional payments included in the agreement. The striker quickly established himself as an important attacking option, scoring more than 20 goals across all competitions and contributing to the club’s successful campaign.
However, the 27-year-old has encountered difficulties during the current season as he attempts to maintain his position in Arteta’s starting lineup. Kai Havertz has reportedly moved ahead of him in the manager’s selection, increasing the competition for the centre-forward position.
Gyokeres featured from the start in Arsenal’s matches against Ipswich Town, Napoli and Lille but failed to score in those encounters. Although Arsenal secured victories in all three games, his inability to find the net may have increased the pressure on him to improve his attacking output.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Calafiori discussed the competitive attitudes among his teammates and acknowledged that he also struggles to accept defeat. Nevertheless, he pointed to Gyokeres as another player whose desire to win is particularly intense.
The Swedish international has enjoyed considerable success in recent seasons, winning league titles across his previous three campaigns, including two with Sporting CP and one with Arsenal.
Despite those achievements, Gyokeres must continue proving his value as competition for places at the Emirates Stadium increases. His ability to convert chances and deliver consistent performances will be crucial in determining how frequently Arteta selects him.
The coming weeks could therefore represent an important period for the striker. Returning to regular goalscoring form would strengthen his claim to the starting position, while further struggles could make it increasingly difficult for him to displace Havertz and secure a central role in Arsenal’s plans.
