Nigeria Have Set A FIFA Record That No Country Has Ever Achieved After Defeating Brazil

According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Nigeria's Flamingos have established a remarkable record in FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup history after becoming the first team to have five different players win the Player of the Match award across six matches at a single edition of the competition.

The historic achievement follows Nigeria's impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-final on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, a result that secured the Flamingos' first-ever appearance in the final of the tournament.

What makes this accomplishment special is that five different Nigerian players have received individual recognition for their outstanding performances during the competition. This demonstrates the depth of quality in the Nigerian squad and how different players have stepped up to deliver when their country needed them.

The five players who have won the Player of the Match award are Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, who received the recognition after Nigeria's 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico, and Kanyinsola Yusuf, who earned the honour following the 3-1 triumph over defending champions North Korea.

Oluebube Umejiaku was also recognised after scoring in Nigeria's 2-1 Round of 16 victory over Mexico. Favour Nkwocha subsequently received the award following the Flamingos' narrow 1-0 quarter-final victory against Venezuela.

The latest player to join this historic list is Awawu Bashiru, who produced an outstanding performance against Brazil. The young Nigerian forward scored twice in the second half to inspire her teammates to a memorable 3-1 victory and secure their place in the final.

Nigeria's achievement is particularly remarkable because the individual awards have not been dominated by one player. Instead, five different members of the squad have received recognition, highlighting the collective strength and determination of the team.

With Japan waiting in the final on Saturday, November 7, the Flamingos now have an opportunity to complete their remarkable campaign by winning Nigeria's first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title.
