Brighton Boss Fabian Hurzeler Claims Liverpool Were NOT Trying to Win the Game

According to a report by Daily Mail on Sunday October 25, 2026, Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has sparked debate following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, suggesting that his team showed greater attacking ambition despite failing to secure any points.

The Seagulls suffered a disappointing Premier League loss on Sunday, with a Pascal Groß own goal and a strike from Alexander Isak giving Liverpool their fourth consecutive victory. However, Hürzeler was left frustrated by the result, believing Brighton had created enough opportunities to make the contest much closer.

Speaking after the match, the Brighton boss praised his players for their approach and insisted that they continued to follow their game plan despite the eventual defeat.

“Everyone in the stadium saw that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game and therefore I have to praise my players,” Hürzeler said.

His comments appeared to question Liverpool’s attacking approach, although he did not explicitly name the Reds as the team that was not trying to win. Instead, the German coach focused on Brighton’s efforts to create opportunities and the disappointment of failing to convert them.

Hürzeler believes the result could have been different had his players been more clinical in front of goal. Brighton had a significant opportunity to take the lead when Yasin Ayari missed a promising chance while the score was still goalless.

The visitors also created other opportunities before Liverpool found the breakthrough, leaving their manager convinced that his side had missed an opportunity to take something away from Anfield.

“Everyone in the stadium felt there was a missed opportunity for us, because it's not only after the goal or the goals they scored,” he added.

“Also, before they scored, we had one, two big chances and today I think it was just the difference that they scored, we didn't score.”

Brighton’s inability to turn their attacking moments into goals ultimately proved costly. Liverpool took advantage of the opportunities presented to them, while the visitors were left regretting their missed chances.

The opening goal arrived through a Pascal Groß own goal before Isak added Liverpool’s second to put the result beyond Brighton’s reach. The victory strengthened Liverpool’s position in the Premier League top four and extended their winning run to four matches.

Despite the setback, Hürzeler remained determined to take positives from his team’s performance. He praised the players for maintaining their belief in the tactical approach and continuing to work until the final whistle.

“Overall I saw a team with a lot of good things to take away. I saw a team that really had the belief in our approach, that stuck to the match plan, that always kept going,” he said.
