Antonio Conte has reportedly held talks with Manchester United over the possibility of replacing Michael Carrick as manager, but the Italian wants two major conditions met before taking charge at Old Trafford.
According to a report by Metro on Friday, October 23, 2026, Conte has discussed the position with senior United officials as the club considers its options following a poor start to the season.
United's 4-0 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday has increased the pressure on Carrick. The club have recorded only two wins in 11 matches across all competitions this season.
Carrick is expected to remain in charge for Sunday's Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, but another poor result could bring his time as manager to an end.
Italian publication La Repubblica reports that Conte is interested in returning to English football and has made his expectations clear during discussions with United officials earlier this week.
His first demand is greater control over recruitment. Conte reportedly wants authority over transfer decisions so he can strengthen the squad in January and during next summer's transfer window.
The second condition concerns the current squad. He wants to decide which players fit into his plans and which ones should leave. Conte is also reportedly keen to bring members of his trusted coaching staff with him.
Conte has a record of success in England, having led Chelsea to the Premier League title in his first season at Stamford Bridge in 2017.
However, his salary could be a major obstacle. The Times reports that Conte expects to earn more than £10 million a year, which could complicate negotiations with United's hierarchy.
There are also concerns within the club about his intense personality, which reportedly contributed to problems during his spells at Chelsea and Tottenham. United must consider whether his approach fits their long-term plans.
Conte's record elsewhere remains strong. He won Serie A in his first season with Juventus and achieved the same feat in his opening campaign with Napoli.
United are also considering other candidates, including former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who left the club in July, and Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich manager and Germany national team coach.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler are also admired by United, although appointing either could require substantial compensation from their current clubs.
