According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Manchester United are concerned that Benjamin Sesko could remain sidelined until the new year following a setback in his recovery, creating another challenge for manager Michael Carrick as he assesses his attacking options.
The Slovenian striker has been unavailable for five weeks because of a problem separate from the shin injury that affected him for approximately six months. His latest setback has raised concerns about his fitness, with the 23-year-old undergoing further medical examinations at the club's Carrington training complex.
Reports indicate that Manchester United fear Sesko could spend as long as four months out of action. However, individuals close to the forward remain hopeful that his recovery will not extend into February, although they are preparing for the possibility of a lengthy absence.
Sesko's situation could force United to reconsider their transfer plans ahead of the January window. The club did not sign another centre-forward last summer after failing to find a suitable buyer for Joshua Zirkzee, leaving Carrick with limited alternatives in the position.
Everton reportedly made a late approach for Zirkzee on transfer deadline day, but United rejected the enquiry while considering their squad requirements. The Dutch attacker has struggled for regular opportunities, recording only one start in 27 appearances under Carrick.
Matheus Cunha initially operated as United's central striker this season before Bryan Mbeumo assumed the role. Mbeumo has scored four goals, placing him among the club's joint-leading scorers. His previous experience in the position could provide Carrick with a temporary solution while Sesko continues his rehabilitation.
United have already invested heavily in their attacking department, spending £108.5 million on Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund across consecutive summer transfer windows before signing Sesko in a deal reportedly worth £73.62 million. Hojlund subsequently joined Napoli on loan, with the Italian club required to complete a permanent transfer for £38 million. United are also expected to consider selling Zirkzee next year.
Carrick has indicated that the club hopes to provide a clearer assessment of Sesko's condition soon. Speaking on Tuesday, he said, “We’re hoping really soon that we’ll have a clear picture,” while explaining that medical evaluations were still underway.
The United manager added, “There’s a bit of work going on at the moment, so we’ll see what comes out of that.”
Sesko scored 12 goals during his debut campaign at Old Trafford, contributing to United's attacking efforts. His continued absence would therefore complicate Carrick's plans, potentially increasing the need for January reinforcements as the club seeks to maintain its competitiveness in the Premier League.
