According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos following their historic qualification for the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Nigerian team secured their place in the championship match after producing an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday night’s semi-final in Rabat, Morocco.
The achievement represents a major milestone for African women’s football, as Nigeria have become the first country from the continent to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Although African teams have previously made their mark in the competition, none had managed to progress beyond the semi-final stage before the Flamingos’ remarkable run.
Nigeria and Ghana had both finished third in previous editions of the tournament. The Flamingos achieved that position in 2022, while Ghana recorded the same result in 2012.
However, the Nigerian side, under the guidance of head coach Akeem Busari, have gone a step further in the 2026 edition by securing a place in the final and giving Africa its first opportunity to compete for the title.
Motsepe expressed his delight at the team's accomplishment, saying the players had made both Africa and CAF proud through their historic achievement.
The CAF president's message comes after the Flamingos overcame Brazil to move within one victory of becoming world champions at the age-group level.
Their progress has also placed Nigeria in a position to make further history when they face Japan in the final on Sunday.
The decisive encounter will take place in Rabat, where the Flamingos will attempt to complete their impressive campaign by lifting the trophy.
Motsepe is expected to attend the final in Morocco, giving him an opportunity to witness the historic occasion as Nigeria seek to secure the first U-17 Women's World Cup title for an African nation.
The match against Japan will therefore carry enormous significance for the Flamingos, who have already achieved something no previous African team has managed in the history of the competition.
Their 3-1 semi-final triumph over Brazil has guaranteed Africa's first appearance in the final, with Nigeria now preparing for Sunday's showdown in Rabat.
