According to a report by Chelsea Chronicle on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Everton manager David Moyes expressed disappointment with referee Paul Tierney following his side’s 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea.
Pedro Neto scored twice in the second half to secure the victory for Chelsea, ending Everton’s unbeaten start to the season. However, Moyes was unhappy with two refereeing decisions involving Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong and a late challenge by Morgan Rogers on James Garner.
Tierney issued seven yellow cards during the match. Armstrong received the first booking for a strong challenge on Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong, but Moyes questioned whether the midfielder deserved to be cautioned.
“If our football in this country is not going to allow tackles like Harrison's, then I don’t know,” Moyes said.
The Everton manager argued that referees sometimes allow physical challenges to continue and questioned the consistency of the decision.
"We’ve got referees who we want to be the best in Europe, or think they’re the best, because they also let things go. I thought it looked a half decent tackle. Maybe somebody might tell me I’m wrong, or tell me differently, but I wasn’t sure it was the right decision," he said.
Moyes also acknowledged that Armstrong’s challenge could be interpreted differently, but maintained that he was not convinced the booking was justified.
The Everton boss then turned his attention to Rogers’ challenge on Garner, suggesting that the incident could have resulted in a second yellow card.
"I was disappointed with the decision at the time. I had looked at the Rogers tackle on Jimmy Garner, which maybe some might have said something different. I think it might have been a second yellow, but it wasn’t the case," he concluded.
Despite Everton’s frustration over the officiating, Chelsea left with all three points after Neto’s second-half double. The result also brought Moyes’ side’s unbeaten run to an end.
The match featured another major incident late on when Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was stretchered off following a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
