According to a report by ESPN on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos began their campaign at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B encounter. The Nigerian girls fought hard to get back into the match after conceding twice, but their late response was not enough to prevent the European side from claiming all three points.
The match took place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, where both teams were looking to begin the competition on a positive note. However, Poland eventually secured victory through goals from Wiktoria Skrzypczak and Natalia Skrok, while Oluebube Umejiaku scored Nigeria’s only goal of the encounter.
Poland took the lead in the 33rd minute after the referee awarded a penalty following a review of an incident involving a Nigerian defender and a Polish attacker. Wiktoria Skrzypczak stepped forward to take responsibility and converted the spot-kick, giving Poland a 1-0 advantage.
The Flamingos attempted to respond before the interval but were unable to find an equaliser. Nigeria consequently went into the break trailing by one goal, knowing they needed a stronger performance in the second half to get something from the encounter.
Poland increased their advantage in the 65th minute when Natalia Skrok found the back of the net to make it 2-0. The goal placed Nigeria in a difficult position, as the Flamingos now needed two goals to avoid defeat in their opening fixture.
Nigeria’s coaching staff subsequently made changes in an attempt to improve the team's attacking threat. The substitutions helped the Flamingos find a breakthrough in the 79th minute, when Oluebube Umejiaku scored to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Although Kanyinsola Yusuf was initially credited with the goal during the live updates, subsequent reports identified Umejiaku as the goalscorer, with Yusuf involved in creating the opportunity.
The goal gave Nigeria renewed hope of securing a late equaliser, and the Flamingos continued pushing forward during the closing stages. They also appealed for a penalty following an incident in the Polish penalty area, but the decision remained unchanged after a review.
Despite Nigeria's late pressure, Poland defended their advantage until the final whistle to secure a 2-1 victory.
The result means Nigeria must improve in their remaining group matches if they hope to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament. The Flamingos will next face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 20, before taking on Korea DPR on Friday, October 23.
Korea DPR occupy first position after beginning their campaign with a commanding 6-0 victory over Puerto Rico. Poland sit second following their 2-1 win against Nigeria, while the Flamingos occupy third place without a point. Puerto Rico are fourth after suffering the heaviest defeat of the opening round.
With two group matches remaining, Nigeria still have an opportunity to recover from their opening defeat. However, the Flamingos must secure positive results against Puerto Rico and Korea DPR to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
