According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 16, 2026, Chelsea defender Jorrel Hato has revealed details about Joao Pedro’s highly competitive attitude during training sessions at Cobham, offering supporters a glimpse into the Brazilian striker’s personality away from match days.
Pedro has enjoyed an impressive start to the season, scoring five goals and providing three assists in five Premier League appearances. His outstanding performances earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award for September, recognising his significant contribution to Chelsea’s attacking play.
The Brazilian continued his excellent form against Bournemouth, scoring twice in Chelsea’s convincing 5-1 victory. Under manager Xabi Alonso, Pedro has increasingly featured as a central striker, a role that has allowed him to demonstrate his finishing ability and become a major threat in the opposition’s penalty area.
However, Hato’s recent comments have revealed another side of the forward, highlighting the determination and competitiveness that also characterise his behaviour during training.
During an interview with the official Premier League YouTube channel, the Dutch defender was asked what Chelsea supporters might not know about Pedro’s conduct on the training ground.
Hato explained that the Brazilian takes small-sided training matches seriously, particularly when competing against his teammates. According to the defender, Pedro is determined to win regardless of whether the game is part of a training session or a competitive fixture.
"He's a fierce competitor. Quite cutthroat. His goal in five-a-side is to win every time," Hato said.
The defender also explained that Pedro does not hide his emotions when his team wins. His excitement is reportedly obvious after successful training matches, reflecting the striker’s strong desire to compete and celebrate victories with those around him.
Hato further described how Pedro reacts when he comes out on top during these contests.
"You will know," he said.
Pedro’s competitive mentality could prove valuable as Chelsea prepare to face Everton in the Premier League. The Merseyside club has historically presented a difficult challenge for the Blues, particularly when they travel away from home.
Chelsea have lost six of their last eight away matches against Everton, underlining the difficulty of securing victories on the opposition’s ground. Pedro has also found goals hard to come by against the Toffees, despite winning three of his seven meetings with them.
With Everton making a promising start under manager David Moyes, Chelsea will need another strong attacking performance to maintain their momentum. Pedro’s confidence, determination and goalscoring ability could be crucial as Alonso’s side seek another important result.
Hato’s revelations suggest that Pedro’s competitive spirit extends beyond match days, providing further insight into the mentality behind his impressive performances this season.
