Why Mike Penders has to come of age very quickly in Emi Martinez's absence

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has taken an unexpected turn, with Emi Martínez’s injury potentially opening the door for Mike Penders to step into the spotlight sooner than anticipated.

In football, you usually get a chance in your club's first team when you're deemed to be ready and have developed enough to handle the pressure under high-stress situations, but in some instances, you can be thrust into the deep end when you least expect it.

When Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was involved in what looked to be a serious head collision with Everton centre back Jared Branthwaite, the Argentine had to be stretchered off with Belgian youngster Mike Penders coming on to see out the remainder of the game in Merseyside.

It was revealed after the game that Martinez was taken to the hospital while conscious, but due to concussion protocol, it looks very likely that Martinez will have to miss a minimum of two weeks, meaning he will definetly miss games against Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United and it was reported post-match that Martinez will be undergoing jaw surgery.

Now with Martinez sidelined for what looks like it could be up to a month, Penders has a chance to be Chelsea's number one, and whilst it was Penders' Premier League debut yesterday, he looked relaxed and comfortable, especially when coming for crosses and demanding his penalty box.

When Penders joined Chelsea from Genk in 2024, many in Belgium thought that he could become Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper, drawing similarities with former Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois, who took a similar path to becoming the Blues' first choice, just under different circumstances.

Penders, who trained alongside Courtois at the recent World Cup, spoke very highly of the 21-year-old both as a player and a person, and what attracted Chelsea to not want to loan out Penders again and keep him around the first team were his performances for Strasbourg last season, helping them reach the semi-finals of the Coupe de France and the Conference League.

Where Penders has to come of age is now keeping Chelsea afloat both in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup, with key games coming up that could decide Chelsea's momentum coming into the busy festive period until Martinez returns, if Penders can keep a couple of clean sheets in the next three or four games and help Chelsea maintain their league position.

Goalkeepers in recent years have typically been Chelsea's downfall when the team seems to be playing well; a couple of goalkeeping errors or poor performances have meant the Blues have dropped points at crucial points, but Xabi Alonso must have faith in Penders if the trusted him to put him in the matchday squad and now what seems likely to be their number one.
