According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Barcelona are preparing to reinforce their defensive department ahead of the January transfer window, with Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez emerging as two of four players being considered by the club.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s recent consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have exposed several weaknesses in their defensive setup. These disappointing results have reportedly convinced the club's hierarchy that bringing in an experienced centre-back should become one of their priorities when the winter transfer window opens.
The Catalan giants had previously enjoyed an impressive run of 11 consecutive victories before suffering those setbacks. However, the defeats demonstrated that the team still struggles defensively when facing some of Europe's strongest opponents. Manager Hansi Flick has relied on Andreas Christensen, Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin, while Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde have also provided defensive options.
Despite having several players capable of operating in defence, Barcelona are concerned about injuries and their limited squad depth. The club therefore wants to recruit a reliable defender who can immediately improve the team's performances in both La Liga and European competitions.
Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol is reportedly Barcelona's leading candidate. The 24-year-old Croatian international is particularly attractive because of his ability to play both as a centre-back and left-back. However, completing a transfer could prove extremely challenging, especially after he recently signed a contract extension that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.
Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni is another defender on Barcelona's shortlist. The 27-year-old Italian was previously considered during the summer transfer window and has considerable experience at the highest level. Nevertheless, his contract, which expires in June 2028, could make negotiations difficult.
Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez is also attracting attention. The 28-year-old Argentine could represent a more attainable option depending on his contractual situation. However, Barcelona would have to examine his previous injury problems before making a serious move.
Meanwhile, Real Betis defender Natan is another possibility. The 25-year-old Brazilian has impressed with his performances in Spain, while his estimated €30 million valuation could make him a financially realistic alternative.
Barcelona must carefully evaluate their financial situation before making a final decision, as they seek a defender who offers quality, experience and availability.
