Nigeria Have Made History In A Way No Other Country Has Ever Done At FIFA Tournament

According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Nigeria's Flamingos have made history at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco by becoming the first team in the competition's history to have five different players win the Player of the Match award during a single edition, achieving the feat across six matches.

The historic milestone was completed after Nigeria recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday's semi-final on November 4, securing their first-ever appearance in the final of the tournament.

The achievement highlights the remarkable depth and quality within the Flamingos squad, as five different players have received individual recognition for their performances throughout the competition. Rather than depending on one standout performer, Nigeria have benefited from important contributions across the team.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi became the first Nigerian to collect the Player of the Match award after helping her side secure a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico in the group stage. Kanyinsola Yusuf followed her by earning the honour after Nigeria defeated defending champions North Korea 3-1.

Oluebube Umejiaku was the next player to receive the award after finding the net in Nigeria's 2-1 Round of 16 triumph over Mexico. Favour Nkwocha then became the fourth Flamingos player to claim the individual recognition following her impressive display in the narrow 1-0 quarter-final victory against Venezuela.

Awawu Bashiru completed the historic achievement after being named Player of the Match in the semi-final against Brazil. The Nigerian forward scored twice in the second half to inspire her team to a memorable 3-1 victory over the South American side and book their place in the final.

According to FIFA's tournament records, no other nation has had five different players win the Player of the Match award at a single edition of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, making Nigeria's accomplishment a unique milestone in the competition.

Beyond setting a new record, the Flamingos have demonstrated their collective strength, determination and attacking ability throughout the tournament. Their success has been built on contributions from different players, with several members of the squad stepping up during crucial moments against challenging opposition.

Nigeria will now prepare for Saturday's final, where they are set to face Japan. The Flamingos will be aiming to cap off their outstanding campaign by defeating the Asian side and claiming the country's first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup trophy.
