Bruno Fernandes Explains Why Manchester United Players Are Constantly “Mentally Crushed”

According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has opened up about the psychological challenges affecting players at Old Trafford, explaining how the enormous expectations surrounding the club have continued to take a toll on the squad.

The atmosphere at Old Trafford was impressive during Manchester United's 3-2 comeback victory over Roma, with the supporters playing an important role in encouraging the team. The performance demonstrated what the players can achieve when they work together and maintain the right mentality.

However, despite the important victory, Michael Carrick's side have struggled to maintain consistency this season. The result against Roma represented only their third win across all competitions, highlighting the difficulties the club still needs to overcome.

Fernandes believes that the constant demands placed on Manchester United players can create serious mental pressure. According to the Portuguese midfielder, the situation goes beyond what happens during training sessions or inside the dressing room, as several external factors also influence the team's performances.

The United captain explained that footballers respond differently to pressure, with some finding it easier to manage than others. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that disappointing results and performances can make the situation even more frustrating for everyone involved.

Fernandes also pointed out that the players sometimes struggle to deliver the performances they expect from themselves, particularly because they understand the quality and potential within the squad.

He explained that having high personal and collective standards makes disappointing performances emotionally difficult, especially when the team knows it is capable of producing much better results.

The Portuguese international further suggested that Manchester United have several issues requiring attention rather than one particular problem that can easily be resolved.

According to Fernandes, different aspects of the club need improvement, and certain things must be approached differently if the team hopes to move forward.

His comments highlight the growing frustration within the Manchester United dressing room as the club continues its search for consistency.

The Red Devils will need to develop greater confidence, mental strength and stability if they are to rediscover their best form and meet the expectations of their supporters.
