Girona are reportedly preparing to revive their interest in Barcelona youngster Brian Farinas ahead of the January transfer window after missing out on the midfielder during the summer.
According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Girona remain keen on securing the 20-year-old’s services, although there have been no fresh negotiations or direct contact between the two clubs.
The La Liga side previously came close to reaching an agreement with Barcelona for Farinas in a deal reportedly worth €1.5 million for 50 per cent of his rights. However, the proposed transfer fell through after head coach Hansi Flick decided to retain the youngster and include him in his first-team plans, handing him the No. 4 shirt.
Despite that disappointment, Girona have not lost interest and could consider another approach when the transfer window reopens in January.
Farinas strengthened his reputation with an impressive season for Barcelona Atletic, registering five goals and seven assists in 33 appearances. His ability to operate in several midfield positions was one of the qualities that attracted Girona’s attention.
However, the youngster is yet to make a competitive first-team appearance this season, raising questions about his immediate prospects under Flick. Should his opportunities remain limited, Girona could explore the possibility of bringing him in on loan in January.
Nevertheless, Barcelona’s current injury problems could change the situation. The Catalan giants are dealing with several defensive absences, potentially creating an opportunity for Farinas to become more involved.
Xavi Espart is expected to miss approximately seven weeks after suffering an ankle injury during the Clasico against Real Madrid. Eric Garcia is also recovering from an injury, while Jules Kounde’s availability for the upcoming meeting with Alaves remains uncertain.
Farinas could provide Flick with an additional option because of his positional flexibility. Although primarily a midfielder, he has already been tested at right-back by the Barcelona manager.
The youngster featured in that position during Barcelona’s pre-season friendly against Birmingham City on July 31, demonstrating his ability to adapt to a different role when required.
With the club currently assessing its defensive options, Farinas could have an opportunity to prove his usefulness to the first team. Regular involvement would also strengthen his chances of remaining part of Flick’s long-term plans.
For now, Girona’s interest remains active, but there is no indication that an agreement is imminent. Farinas’ future could ultimately depend on whether he can take advantage of the opportunities that emerge at Barcelona before January.
