According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Scholes singled out Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes and midfielder Declan Rice as two players whose qualities could significantly improve Manchester United.
His comments come amid Arsenal's impressive campaign under Mikel Arteta, with the North London club currently occupying the top position in the Premier League, three points ahead of their closest challengers.
The Gunners strengthened their position at the summit after securing an important victory over Liverpool at Anfield. Arsenal produced a disciplined defensive display, keeping the hosts from recording a single shot on target.
Although the performance was not particularly exciting from an attacking perspective, the team's defensive organisation demonstrated their ability to compete for major honours. Their impressive display has also earned recognition from Scholes, who has previously expressed reservations about Arteta's side.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football, Scholes was asked to identify footballers from any club around the world whom he would sign to transform Manchester United.
The former England international quickly mentioned Arsenal centre-back Gabriel as one of his preferred options.
"Right, okay. Gabriel, centre-half for Arsenal," Scholes said.
He went on to mention several other high-profile footballers, including Jude Bellingham, Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappe. He initially considered England captain Harry Kane before changing his selection and opting for Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice instead.
Gabriel has played a crucial role in establishing Arsenal as one of the Premier League's strongest defensive teams since joining the club from Lille in 2020. The Brazilian has consistently delivered impressive performances and remains an important figure in the defence, even with William Saliba recently sidelined through injury.
Rice, on the other hand, has developed into one of the division's most influential midfielders. The England international has recorded five assists this season, making him the Premier League's leading player in that category.
His latest contribution came during Arsenal's victory against Liverpool, when he provided the assist for the decisive goal.
Interestingly, Scholes had previously questioned whether Rice justified the £105 million Arsenal paid to secure his services. However, he has acknowledged the midfielder's exceptional ability and suggested that he could become "virtually unplayable" if he reduced the number of touches he takes on the ball.
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag also disclosed that he had attempted to bring Rice to Old Trafford before the midfielder eventually decided to join Arsenal.
Scholes' latest comments underline the growing quality within Arteta's squad, with Gabriel and Rice emerging as two players whose abilities he believes could make a significant difference to Manchester United.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to their upcoming Champions League encounter against Slavia Prague as they look to maintain their impressive form across competitions.
