According to a report by Football London on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Arsenal's impressive performances this season have attracted admiration from former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, who has identified two Mikel Arteta players he would prioritise when rebuilding his former club.
The Gunners currently sit three points clear at the Premier League summit following their impressive victory over Liverpool at Anfield. Arteta's team delivered an outstanding defensive performance, preventing Liverpool from registering a single shot on target.
Although Arsenal's display was not particularly entertaining, their defensive organisation demonstrated the qualities required to challenge for major trophies. Even Scholes, previously critical of this Arsenal side, has acknowledged the quality within Arteta's squad.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football, Scholes was asked to select players from any club worldwide who could transform Manchester United. The former midfielder immediately identified Arsenal defender Gabriel as one of his preferred choices.
"Right, okay. Gabriel, centre-half for Arsenal," Scholes said.
He subsequently mentioned Jude Bellingham, Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappe before initially selecting Harry Kane. However, he changed his decision and replaced the England striker with Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.
Gabriel has been instrumental in Arsenal's defensive development since arriving from Lille in 2020. The Brazilian continues delivering impressive performances and has maintained his importance despite William Saliba's recent absence through injury.
Meanwhile, Rice has established himself as one of the Premier League's influential midfielders, registering five assists, the highest tally in the division. His latest contribution came against Liverpool, where he provided the assist for Arsenal's winning goal.
Scholes previously questioned the midfielder's £105 million price tag but acknowledged his enormous potential, suggesting Rice would become "virtually unplayable" if he reduced the number of touches he takes.
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag also revealed that he attempted to sign Rice before the midfielder eventually chose Arsenal.
Scholes' selections highlight Arsenal's growing strength, particularly compared with United, as the Gunners prepare to face Slavia Prague in the Champions League.
