According to a report published by the Manchester Evening News on Saturday, October 24, 2026, United have struggled to produce positive results under Michael Carrick, managing only two victories in their opening 11 matches across all competitions. Their difficulties continued on Wednesday night when they suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League.
The heavy loss has intensified scrutiny of Carrick, who faces increasing pressure to improve performances and rebuild confidence within his squad. United must now prepare for their upcoming Premier League encounter against Bournemouth, with a stronger collective display needed to demonstrate that the team can overcome its current difficulties.
Despite the disappointing results, Santos believes United have sufficient quality within their squad to reverse their fortunes. He specifically mentioned Carlos, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri as players capable of helping the club improve its performances and regain consistency.
Speaking on Premier League Productions' Preview Show, Santos highlighted the importance of cooperation between the players, coaching staff and supporters, explaining that everyone must contribute to the club's recovery.
“The only way to change the situation here, our staff, our players, our supporters, is together,” Santos said.
“We have to believe because everyone wants to change the situation. We have to wake up and work hard every single day because we have a lot of good players – Carlos, Mason, Bruno, Kobbie, Youri. So I think this connection is so important.”
His remarks come as United attempt to address their inconsistent performances despite possessing several technically gifted players. Fernandes continues to provide leadership and creativity, while Mainoo's injury has reduced the midfield options available to Carrick.
Mount is also hoping to establish greater consistency after experiencing injury setbacks since joining United from Chelsea. Meanwhile, Santos has been working to secure a regular position in midfield after initially struggling to obtain sufficient playing time.
Mainoo's absence has created additional opportunities for the Brazilian, who featured in the defeat against Como.
Santos believes United's recovery will depend on a united approach, with discipline, belief and daily commitment required to improve results. Rather than relying on individual brilliance, the midfielder wants the entire squad to work together towards restoring the club's competitive standards.
