According to a post shared by Cristiano Ronaldo on Instagram on November 5, 2026, Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has sent a heartfelt message to the Portuguese football legend following his announcement that he is retiring from international football.
The 41-year-old confirmed his decision through an emotional video shared on his social media accounts, bringing an end to his remarkable 23-year career with the Portugal national team.
Ronaldo’s announcement attracted reactions from footballers, former teammates, clubs and supporters across the world, with several prominent names taking to social media to celebrate his achievements and recognise his contribution to the game.
Among those who reacted was Vinicius Junior, who left a short but touching message in the comments section of Ronaldo’s Instagram announcement.
The Brazilian international wrote, “Forever number 1!!!!!!”, expressing his admiration for the former Real Madrid forward and acknowledging the legacy he has built throughout his career.
Vinicius’ message carries particular significance because Ronaldo remains one of the most influential figures in Real Madrid’s history. The two players also shared the dressing room at the Spanish club during the 2018/19 season, when the Brazilian was beginning his journey in European football.
Ronaldo spent nine successful years at the Santiago Bernabeu, establishing himself as one of the greatest players to represent the club before departing for Juventus in 2018. His achievements in Madrid continue to inspire younger generations, including Vinicius.
The Portuguese superstar leaves international football with an extraordinary record of 234 appearances and 146 goals for his country, making him the men’s international football record appearance holder and leading goalscorer.
He also helped Portugal win the 2016 European Championship and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Although his international career has now come to an end, Ronaldo is not retiring from professional football altogether. The forward is expected to continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
