Barcelona chasing a record for the ages heading into the Real Madrid game

According to a report by Barca Universal on Sunday October 18, 2026, Barcelona are on the verge of making history under Hansi Flick as they prepare to face Real Madrid in the first El Clásico of the 2026/27 season.

The Catalan giants strengthened their impressive start to the campaign with a 5-2 victory over Real Betis at La Cartuja on Saturday, extending their winning streak in La Liga to nine matches.

According to reports, Barcelona have now equalled the record for the best start to a La Liga season, previously held exclusively by Real Madrid following their nine consecutive victories at the beginning of the 1968/69 campaign.

Flick’s side now have the opportunity to surpass that historic achievement when they welcome their arch-rivals to the Camp Nou next weekend. A victory would give Barcelona ten consecutive wins from their opening ten league matches, setting a new benchmark in Spanish top-flight football.

The timing could hardly be more significant, as Barcelona would have the chance to break a record associated with Real Madrid for more than half a century by defeating their biggest rivals.

Barcelona’s remarkable run has been built on their attacking brilliance, with the team scoring 39 goals in their opening nine league matches at an average of 4.33 per game.

Their goalscoring form has also been a collective effort rather than the responsibility of one player. Thirteen different players have found the net during the impressive run, highlighting the variety of attacking threats available to Flick.

The victory over Betis further demonstrated that strength, with Dani Olmo and Eric Garcia among the players getting on the scoresheet as Barcelona continued to find goals from different areas of the pitch.

However, Barcelona face a demanding schedule before the highly anticipated showdown with Real Madrid, including a Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain. Managing the squad and maintaining their momentum will be crucial if Flick’s men are to arrive at El Clásico in the best possible condition.

Real Madrid will present a significant challenge, but Barcelona have given themselves an opportunity to turn an already impressive start into a historic achievement.

For Flick, the prospect of setting a new La Liga record against his team’s fiercest rivals adds another layer of significance to the encounter. Barcelona will be determined to maintain their winning form and make history in front of their supporters.
