According to a report by the Manchester Evening Standard on Friday, October 16, 2026, former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has revealed how the club’s treatment of his contract situation left him deeply disappointed, despite winning the Player of the Year award for the 2016-17 season.
The Spanish midfielder joined Manchester United from Athletic Club in 2014 and enjoyed a successful five-year spell at Old Trafford. His impressive performances earned him the club’s Player of the Year award, leading him to believe that he would be rewarded with a new contract.
Speaking to Rio Ferdinand on Rio Meets, Herrera explained that he was extremely happy at Manchester United and had even told his agent that he was willing to accept any contract offer from the club. However, his excitement gradually turned into disappointment as United failed to approach him about extending his stay.
Herrera revealed that he repeatedly contacted his agent to find out whether the club had made any progress regarding a new deal, but there was no encouraging response. His frustration increased when Manchester United eventually sent him a letter informing him that they were activating the fifth year of his existing contract.
Reflecting on the experience, Herrera admitted that the situation was emotionally painful, as he had expected the club to discuss his future with him directly rather than communicate through a letter.
The former midfielder also recalled confronting ex-Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the matter. Herrera questioned why the club had not arranged a personal meeting with him to discuss his contract situation.
During his time at Old Trafford, Herrera made 189 appearances across all competitions, scoring 20 goals and providing 27 assists. After five seasons with the club, he departed as a free agent in 2019 and joined Paris Saint-Germain.
