According to a report by Metro on Monday October 26, 2026, former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has warned the club against appointing Antonio Conte as Michael Carrick’s replacement, predicting that the Italian could deliver only a short-term improvement before the situation deteriorates.
Conte, 57, has been linked with the managerial position at Old Trafford amid growing uncertainty over Carrick’s future following United’s disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
The result increased the pressure on Carrick, with United sitting 16th in the Premier League table after eight matches, according to the report.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Meulensteen made his position clear when asked about the possibility of Conte taking charge at Old Trafford.
“I’ve seen that name being said and I would not be a supporter of that appointment at all. I think that would maybe get a very short uplift but it would come crashing down really, really quickly knowing the way Conte goes about his job,” he said.
Meulensteen, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, believes the club must carefully consider its next managerial appointment rather than rushing into a decision because of poor results.
The former United coach also argued that the club’s problems go beyond the manager, pointing to the ownership as a major obstacle to progress.
“The problem is that the ownership has Manchester United in a headlock. That’s the problem and they can’t get out of it,” Meulensteen added.
His comments suggest that appointing another high-profile manager might not solve United’s difficulties unless the club also addresses its wider structural issues and establishes a clear football strategy.
Meanwhile, Carrick has remained defiant despite the growing uncertainty surrounding his position. Following the Bournemouth defeat, the United manager acknowledged the situation but insisted that he remained committed to the club.
“I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal, and I love this place,” Carrick said.
He also dismissed suggestions that his applause towards supporters at the Stretford End was a farewell gesture.
“It wasn’t a farewell from me. I’m feeling it for my players, they’re going through a tough spell,” he explained.
Conte is not the only manager reportedly linked with the United job, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann also mentioned as possible candidates. However, Conte has reportedly stated that he is not negotiating with any club and would only consider returning to management when the right conditions are in place.
Manchester United now face an important period as they attempt to improve their performances. Their next Premier League fixture is against Chelsea away from home on Saturday.
