Former Chelsea and Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has urged Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott to prioritise a move to Anfield over Stamford Bridge, arguing that Liverpool are heading in a better direction and offer greater stability.
According to a report by Metro on Thursday, 29 October 2026, Johnson believes Liverpool would be the better destination for Scott, who has attracted interest from several European giants following his impressive performances for Bournemouth and England.
The 23-year-old has developed into one of the Premier League's highly rated midfielders since joining Bournemouth from Bristol City three-and-a-half years ago.
His recent displays for England have further strengthened his reputation, although a thigh injury could keep him out of action for up to eight weeks.
Chelsea are reportedly leading the race for Scott and are increasingly confident of securing his signature. However, Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid are also monitoring the midfielder, with Bournemouth reportedly prepared to consider offers exceeding £80 million.
Asked whether Scott should choose Chelsea or Liverpool, Johnson told Betfred: "As of today, I’d have to say Liverpool."
He added: "I’d choose Liverpool purely for stability, but I’m not sure which club he’d get more game-time at to be honest."
Johnson also acknowledged that both clubs had understandable reasons for pursuing the England international, while questioning whether the midfielder had already demonstrated enough to establish himself at a top-four club.
Speaking separately to Action Network, the former England right-back said: "Alex Scott is a good player, but I haven’t seen enough of him to say if he’s at the top-four level."
Johnson suggested that Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong could also be an attractive option for either club, provided concerns over his fitness and the financial terms of a potential transfer could be resolved.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth are determined to retain Scott and remain hopeful of agreeing a new contract with the midfielder, whose current deal runs until June 2028.
Club owner Bill Foley recently reaffirmed Bournemouth's desire to keep the player, insisting the club remained the right environment for his development despite interest from bigger sides.
