According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Terry Devlin scored a late equaliser to earn Portsmouth a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a disappointing Championship encounter at Molineux.
Wolves looked set to claim all three points after second-half substitute Jordan James gave them the lead, but Portsmouth found a late response to extend their recent run to just one defeat in seven matches. The result also prevented Wolves from moving into fifth place in the early league standings, ahead of local rivals West Bromwich Albion.
Portsmouth secured their equaliser after Tommy Doyle fouled Adrian Segecic close to the edge of the penalty area. Segecic took the resulting free-kick, but his effort was blocked. Devlin reacted quickly to the loose ball and volleyed home the rebound to register his second goal of the season.
The late goal sparked tension between the two dugouts, with Portsmouth manager John Mousinho becoming involved in a confrontation with Wolves head coach Cesar Peixoto. Peixoto reportedly accused his opposite number of talking too much during the heated exchange.
The match took place in heavy rain on a subdued evening at Molineux. The fixture had also been rescheduled twice because of confusion surrounding arrangements made by the football authorities.
Neither team managed to produce much attacking quality during a largely uneventful first half, with both sides failing to register a shot on target. Portsmouth midfielder Rocco Shein came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval, but his left-footed attempt drifted narrowly wide of the right post.
Wolves improved after the break and eventually took the lead in the 62nd minute. James, who had been introduced at half-time, combined with Fer Lopez before driving a powerful right-footed shot into the net.
The goal appeared to put the hosts on course for victory, with James continuing to make an impression since returning to English football from French club Rennes in mid-August. It was his second goal as a substitute, and his introduction had given Wolves greater attacking energy.
James also maintained his record of scoring his first two goals for Wolves at Molineux, further highlighting his impact in front of the home supporters.
However, Portsmouth refused to give up and continued pushing for an equaliser. Their persistence paid off when Devlin capitalised on the loose ball from Segecic’s free-kick, ensuring the visitors returned home with a point.
The draw moved Wolves up one position to seventh in the Championship table, leaving them behind Birmingham City in fourth, West Bromwich Albion in fifth and Stoke City in sixth. Portsmouth remained 13th despite extending their improved run of results.
