CAF Confirms Nigeria's Samson Adamu as New General Secretary

According to report by Vanguard on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its new General Secretary.

CAF announced the appointment on Sunday, November 1, 2026, through a statement published on its official website, following a comprehensive recruitment exercise conducted by the continental football governing body.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Adamu had been serving in an acting capacity since March after the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, who subsequently became president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, explained that the appointment followed a competitive selection process involving a public advertisement of the vacancy and interviews with several applicants.

Adamu brings eight years of experience within CAF, having joined the organisation in 2018 as Director of Competitions before later becoming Director of Tournaments and Events.

Motsepe highlighted his contributions to African football, particularly his involvement in organising major continental competitions, including the prestigious TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

The new General Secretary is also a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, an academic qualification that has further strengthened his knowledge of football administration.

In his new position, Adamu will be responsible for coordinating CAF's daily administrative operations and ensuring the effective execution of the organisation's strategic objectives.

He is the son of Amos Adamu, a former Director of Sports in the then Ministry of Sports and former member of the FIFA Executive Committee.

His appointment also places him among notable personalities who have occupied the influential position.

They include Egypt's Mourad Fahmy, who served between 1961 and 1982, his son Mustapha Fahmy, who held the office from 1982 to 2010, and Amr Fahmy, who served from 2017 to 2019.

Adamu's appointment marks another significant achievement for Nigeria in African football administration.
