According to a report by Football London on Thursday October 29, 2026, Chelsea have suffered a potential setback ahead of Saturday’s Premier League showdown against Manchester United after Michael Carrick confirmed Bruno Fernandes will continue captaining the Red Devils following their recent disagreement.
The Portuguese midfielder is now expected to feature at Stamford Bridge, presenting another challenge for Xabi Alonso’s side as they prepare for an important league encounter against their struggling opponents.
Fernandes attracted criticism last week after publicly questioning Carrick’s tactical decisions following Manchester United’s disappointing 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como.
The midfielder was subsequently dropped from the starting lineup and remained an unused substitute during United’s 3-0 Premier League defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday.
However, Carrick has since held discussions with his captain to resolve their differences, insisting the situation has been addressed and Fernandes remains committed to the club.
Speaking during Thursday’s press conference, Carrick emphasised the midfielder’s importance, praising his leadership qualities and contributions throughout his Manchester United career.
“He’s an important player for this group,” Carrick explained. “He’s fully committed to this club, making things better. He’s the one who’s led the team so well for many a year. He’ll continue to do that.”
Although Fernandes has struggled to produce his usual attacking influence recently, registering no goals or assists across his previous five Premier League appearances, his quality remains undeniable.
Chelsea must therefore remain cautious, particularly considering the Portuguese international’s impressive historical performances against them whenever these Premier League rivals meet.
Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia or Jordan Henderson could be tasked with restricting Fernandes’ influence in midfield, although Chelsea must also monitor Kobbie Mainoo’s potential return.
Carrick confirmed that Mainoo had resumed training, offering encouragement regarding the midfielder’s availability for Saturday’s contest after missing several matches through injury.
Fernandes has recorded five goals and two assists across 14 appearances against Chelsea, demonstrating his ability to influence encounters between both clubs.
His recent record is particularly concerning for the Blues, with four goals and one assist across his last seven meetings against them.
The midfielder also scored his 100th Manchester United goal in his 200th Premier League appearance against Chelsea, underlining his importance to the club.
With Chelsea struggling defensively throughout the 2026/27 campaign, Fernandes could exploit their weaknesses again, making him one of Manchester United’s biggest threats heading into Saturday’s encounter.
