Nigeria Flamingos Make History After Beating Brazil 3-1 To Reach First U-17 Women’s World Cup Final

Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history after beating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Wednesday. The victory has taken Nigeria to the final of the competition for the first time in history, and it has made the Flamingos the first African nation to ever reach the final of the U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Nigerian side started the tournament in a difficult way after they lost their opening match 2-1 to Poland. Many people did not believe that the team could go far in the competition, but the Flamingos refused to give up. They recovered with a narrow win over Puerto Rico, and they later shocked the football world with a 3-1 win over two-time reigning champions DPR Korea. That victory changed everything for the team and gave them the confidence to keep pushing forward.

In the semi-final against Brazil, the Flamingos showed great character and determination. The team broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Queen Joseph, who converted a good assist from Oluwakemi Adegubyi. Brazil tried to fight back, but Nigeria stayed calm and continued to attack. Awawu Bashiru scored twice in the match and was later named the Player of the Match for her outstanding performance. Brazil pulled one goal back late in the game through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but it was too late to stop Nigeria from making history.

The result means that Nigeria have now beaten Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil on their way to the final, after they had earlier beaten Puerto Rico and DPR Korea. The achievement is even more special because Nigeria had previously finished third in 2022, which was their best result before this tournament. The team has now surpassed that record and will be fighting for the gold medal in the final.

Nigeria will now face Japan in the final on Saturday in Morocco. Japan reached the final after beating North Korea in the other semi-final, and they have been very efficient throughout the tournament. Japan will be playing in their fourth U-17 Women’s World Cup final, while this will be the first final for Nigeria. The final will also be the first time that Japan and Nigeria will meet each other in a global final at this level.

The coach of the Flamingos, Hakeem Busari, has praised the bravery of his players and has urged them to finish the job in the final. Queen Joseph also described reaching the final as a huge privilege, and she said the team is ready to give everything to win the trophy. Victory for Nigeria in the final would make the Flamingos the first nation to lose their opening match and still go on to lift the trophy.

Nigerians across the country and around the world are now celebrating the historic achievement of the Flamingos, and many football fans believe that the young girls have already made the country proud, no matter what happens in the final.
