According to a report by Madrid Universal on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Jose Mourinho’s position as Real Madrid manager could come under pressure following Sunday’s El Clasico, with reports suggesting the club are monitoring alternative candidates despite his encouraging start.
The Portuguese coach has completed his first 100 days since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu, but club president Florentino Perez is reportedly assessing other managerial options.
According to Defensa Central, journalist Jorge Picon claims Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Como manager Cesc Fabregas are among the coaches attracting attention from Madrid’s hierarchy.
Mourinho has won nine of his opening 11 matches since returning, although his results have not completely convinced everyone within the club’s leadership.
Concerns reportedly centre on the team’s performances, with certain officials questioning whether Madrid have consistently demonstrated the quality expected despite their positive results.
A defeat against Barcelona on Sunday could increase the pressure on Mourinho and raise further questions about his long-term future at the Spanish giants.
Mourinho returned to the Bernabeu in June on a three-year contract, meaning an early dismissal would represent a significant decision for the club’s hierarchy.
Although the Portuguese manager reportedly retains support within the dressing room, falling nine points behind Barcelona could prove difficult for Madrid’s leadership to accept.
Arteta and Fabregas have emerged as two potential options should Madrid eventually decide to make a managerial change.
Arteta has established himself at Arsenal and recently extended his contract until 2030, potentially making any move to the Spanish capital difficult to arrange.
Fabregas, meanwhile, continues developing his managerial career at Como, where he remains under contract until 2028.
Former France national team manager Didier Deschamps has also previously been mentioned as another possible candidate for the Real Madrid position.
However, there is currently no indication that Madrid have begun formal negotiations with any prospective replacement for Mourinho.
Removing the Portuguese coach after such a short period would carry considerable risks, especially while the squad continues adapting to his tactical methods.
For now, Mourinho remains in charge, but Sunday’s showdown with Barcelona could prove significant in determining how much confidence the club’s hierarchy places in his leadership.
