According to a report by Madrid Universal on Monday October 26, 2026, in a pivotal 2-1 win over Barcelona, Real Madrid's goalkeeper Andriy Lunin went down in El Clasico history.

The Ukrainian goalkeeper impressed in the absence of Thibaut Courtois, who was unable to play due to illness. With his most recent victory, he became the first goalkeeper in El Clasico history to win four of his first five games.

With a win in Barcelona under their belts, Real Madrid knew they could take a significant step closer to the La Liga championship. But one of the most important games of the season was Courtois's unanticipated absence, so Lunin started in his place.

The 27-year-old performed superbly under pressure, even though it was his first competitive appearance of the season. He kept his cool and focused the whole game, and his contributions were crucial to Madrid's win.

In the 66th minute, he made a game-changing save by diving to his right to block a header from Gerard Martin. After Raphinha had leveled Madrid's first-half opener from Kylian Mbappe, the intervention was crucial.

Three important points were secured for Jose Mourinho's side as Mbappe scored a late second-half goal to restore Madrid's advantage. The advantage was preserved and his team left Barcelona victorious thanks to Lunin's vital save.

With this win, the Ukrainian improves to 4-1 in El Clasico play. On October 20, 2022, January 20, 2024, April 20, 2024, and October 20, 2026, he triumphed. October 2024 was his lone defeat, a 4-0 Barcelona win over Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The significance of possessing a reliable backup goalkeeper was further demonstrated by Lunin's most recent performance. The Ukrainian has shown that he can step up when needed, even though Courtois is still Madrid's first choice.

Goalkeepers who sit on the bench for long stretches may find it difficult to step into high-pressure situations. But when his team needed him most, Lunin responded with confidence and delivered a decisive performance.

His legendary El Clasico victory validates Real Madrid's belief in him and pays tribute to his perseverance. If and when the opportunity presents itself again, he intends to keep up this level of performance.
