According to a report by Metro on Friday, October 23, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has refused to confirm whether captain Bruno Fernandes will be dropped for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth following their disagreement over tactics during the 4-1 defeat to Como.
United suffered a damaging Champions League loss to the Italian side on Wednesday, intensifying pressure on Carrick amid the team’s poor run of results. Fernandes subsequently questioned the manager’s tactical approach, particularly the decision not to employ man-to-man pressing during the encounter.
When asked whether Carrick had made the wrong tactical decisions, the Portugal international said that assessing the manager’s approach was the responsibility of Carrick and his coaching staff rather than the players.
Carrick also expressed his frustration after the defeat, stressing that players must work hard both offensively and defensively if the team is to achieve positive results.
The exchange has raised questions about the relationship between the manager and his captain, with suggestions that Fernandes could be left out of the starting lineup for Bournemouth’s visit to Old Trafford.
Former United captain Wayne Rooney has also urged Carrick to consider removing Fernandes from the spotlight while the club attempts to recover from its disappointing performances.
However, Carrick has not indicated whether he intends to punish the midfielder or remove him from the captaincy.
Speaking at his press conference on Friday, the United manager stressed that the club’s interests would guide his decisions regarding the team and its leadership. He explained that the team, squad dynamics and the wider interests of Manchester United would remain his priorities when making such decisions.
When asked directly whether he would strip Fernandes of the captaincy, Carrick reiterated that he would act in the best interests of the club.
He also declined to discuss whether he had spoken privately with the midfielder, explaining that he did not consider the details necessary to address publicly at that stage.
Carrick opened the press conference by addressing United’s difficult situation and expressing his determination to turn their fortunes around. Despite mounting criticism and speculation about potential replacements, he maintained that he remains confident in his ability to improve the team.
The manager is expected to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, although the result could prove significant for his future at Old Trafford.
United will be seeking a response after their heavy defeat in Italy, with attention focused on Carrick’s team selection and whether Fernandes retains his place as captain.
The Bournemouth encounter therefore presents an important opportunity for United to improve their performances and ease the pressure surrounding the club.
