Five Players Who Could Shape Nigeria’s Flamingos’ World Cup Opener Against Poland

According to Premium Times report , Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, face Poland on Saturday as they begin their campaign at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. With both sides targeting a winning start in Group B, individual performances could play a significant role in deciding the contest.

The Flamingos enter the competition with confidence after winning the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup, but Poland present a serious challenge following their quarter-final appearance at the 2024 edition. Here are five players to watch in the opening encounter.

1. Harmony Chidi — Nigeria

The Flamingos captain will be central to Nigeria’s attacking plans. Chidi previously featured at the 2024 U-17 Women’s World Cup, scoring against Ecuador at the age of 14. Her experience, pace and ability to find the net make her one of Nigeria’s key players.

She scored five goals during the qualifying campaign and added three at the WAFU-B tournament. Her movement and leadership could prove valuable as Nigeria seek to overcome Poland’s defence.

2. Zofia Burzan — Poland

Burzan is one of Poland’s most dangerous attacking players. The midfielder scored twice in the European qualification play-off against England, helping her country secure a place at the tournament.

She also finished as the leading scorer at the UEFA Women’s U-17 Championship with four goals. Nigeria’s midfield will need to restrict her space and prevent her from creating scoring opportunities.

3. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi — Nigeria

Adegbuyi arrives in Morocco after an impressive regional campaign that earned her the Most Valuable Player award at the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup. The Robo Queens forward scored four goals as Nigeria won all five of their matches.

Her attacking ability gives the Flamingos another source of goals, particularly if Poland focus their defensive attention on Chidi.

4. Blanka Zając — Poland

As Poland’s captain, Zając will have an important role in keeping her teammates organised and composed during their opening fixture. Her leadership could become particularly important if Nigeria apply sustained pressure.

Poland will need discipline and concentration to contain the Flamingos’ attacking threats, and Zając’s influence could help determine how well the European side handles the challenge.

5. Queen Joseph — Nigeria

Joseph is another forward capable of making a difference for the Flamingos. The Fosla Academy player demonstrated her finishing ability during qualifying, including scoring a hat-trick against Benin Republic.

Her movement and ability to convert chances could give Nigeria additional attacking options. Combining effectively with Chidi and Adegbuyi would help the team avoid relying on a single player for goals.

A crucial opening test

The match will take place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, with Nigeria hoping to build on their regional success and make a strong start to their World Cup campaign.

While the Flamingos possess several attacking options, they must also guard against Poland’s physical approach and Burzan’s goalscoring threat. The team that manages its opportunities and maintains greater discipline could gain an important early advantage in Group B.
