According to a report by Flashscore on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos suffered a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B match at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigerian youngsters began their campaign on a disappointing note at the Women’s Football Complex, with Oluebube Umejiaku’s late goal proving insufficient to prevent defeat against their European opponents.
Poland took the lead in the 33rd minute when Wiktoria Skrzypczak converted a penalty to put her team ahead. The goal gave the European side a 1-0 advantage and left Nigeria needing to find an equaliser before the interval.
However, the Flamingos were unable to restore parity before half-time, allowing Poland to head into the break with the advantage.
Nigeria returned for the second half hoping to improve their performance and get back into the contest, but Poland strengthened their position in the 66th minute through Natalia Skrok.
Skrok found the back of the net to double Poland’s lead, leaving the Nigerian side trailing 2-0 and facing an uphill battle to avoid defeat in their opening fixture.
The Flamingos continued to search for a response as they attempted to reduce the deficit and give themselves a chance of rescuing a result.
Their efforts eventually paid off in the 79th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku scored Nigeria’s only goal of the encounter, cutting Poland’s advantage to 2-1.
Umejiaku’s strike gave the Nigerian youngsters renewed hope of mounting a late comeback, but they could not find another goal before the final whistle.
Poland maintained their advantage to secure a 2-1 victory and claim all three points from the opening Group B encounter, leaving Nigeria without a point after their first match of the tournament.
The result means the Flamingos must produce positive performances in their remaining group-stage fixtures to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
Nigeria will face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in their second Group B match. The encounter offers the Nigerian side an opportunity to recover from their opening defeat and register their first points in the competition.
The Flamingos will then conclude their group-stage campaign against defending champions Korea DPR on Friday, October 23.
Nigeria will need to collect points from their remaining fixtures to improve their chances of progressing to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
